SCOTT AND LOUISA MALATOS’S architectural preferences reveal their New England sensibilities. With its rippling divided windows, pegged floors, and extensive millwork, their Georgian-style home near Volunteer Park is more Boston than Seattle. “Their tastes are a bit Old World. They’re not afraid of it, and they’re not afraid to have their kids in it,” says interior designer Graciela Rutkowski, who the Malatoses hired to reshape their new space. “It teaches the children to respect beauty.”

This contemporary urban house in Notting Hill, London strikes a fine balance between tradition and modern living. Staffan Tollgard Design Group took a typical terraced house, and transformed it into a multi-functional urban interior design which roll “live,” “work” and “play” into one. On the main floor, this open concept house plan actually has just one door, closing off the cloakroom. The hub of this home is the kitchen; a space designed for living and entertaining which opens onto the garden via three-meter-wide sliding glass doors. Man-made and natural materials come together in a mix of touchable textures and rich patterns which leads you through the home’s social spaces. Although in the city, the natural house design boasts earthy elements like exposed stone walls and wood to keep it connected to nature. Upstairs, the private spaces are a haven for retreat and relaxation, where elegant interiors create an ambience of peace and quiet in this busy urban house plan.

Australia Home Design - Contemporary Concrete House

Designed by Australian architects Robert Mills, the Ross Street house in Melbourne is one Australia home design that really stands out. The contemporary concrete house is accented with timber and glass detail and strong horizontal zinc awnings that bring a modernist flavor to the architecture. Interiors of this contemporary style house are bright and airy, illuminated by expansive windows overlooking outdoor entertaining areas and a pool. Cool stainless steel, crisp lines and a white palette make these minimalist interiors by Hassell modernly chic. A sculptural spiral staircase at the heart of the main level leads up to the second floor, topped by a circular skylight framing an endless celestial view.

Unusual Suspended Guest Houses in Russia

Situated not far away from Moscow (in Moskovskaya Oblast), Russia, this unusual guest houses were raised on a previously closed settlement called Resort Pirogovo. The buildings are suspended and their location on the top of the hill makes for some beautiful views. The overall costs of this building were $4,695,000, a striking sum, but one that justifies what the place houses. When stepping inside, a live-life-to-the-fullest interior is revealed. The residence features an impressive wine room, a library, an indoor office and of course, a well defined entrainment area. Kowalewski Residence

Located in Atlantic Beach, New York, this impressive display of architecture comes from Belmont Freeman Architects and is a symbol of modern design. In a community of 1920’s and 30’s homes, this project comes to break the pattern and impose contemporaneity. We are not fond of this idea, however the building team considers that the the Kowalewski residence remains “respectful of the scale and architectural traditions of the community”. Overall, we think the house has some pretty cool architecture features, such as the irregular shape or the vertical window section which brakes monotony and seems to split the building in two unequal parts. The round window is also of great aesthetic effect. Still, in our opinion, homes should lose the rigid feel and stick to a design that inspires a homey atmosphere.

House Styles Greek Revival

In the mid-19th century, many prosperous Americans believed that ancient Greece represented the spirit of democracy. Interest in British styles had waned during the bitter War of 1812. Also, many Americans sympathized with Greece's own struggles for independence in the 1820s.

Greek Revival architecture began with public buildings in Philadelphia. Many European-trained architects designed in the popular Grecian style, and the fashion spread via carpenter's guides and pattern books. Colonnaded Greek Revival mansions - sometimes called Southern Colonial houses - sprang up throughout the American south. With its classic clapboard exterior and bold, simple lines, Greek Revival architecture became the most predominant housing style in the United States.

During the second half of the 19th century, Gothic Revival and Italianate styles captured the American imagination. Grecian ideas faded from popularity. However, front-gable design - a trademark of the Greek Revival style - continued to influence the shape of American houses well into the 20th century. You will notice the classic front-gable design in simple "National Style" farm houses throughout the United States.

Platinum Style Green Home Renovation

Just look at the before and after photos of this green home and you'll see a couple critical renovation strategies: (1) get rid of water-sucking grass without making your landscaping look crazy, and (2) keep the same size and scale of your home rather than building it into a monstrosity. This home, located at 8020 S.W. Elmwood Street in Southwest Portland, is expected to receive the rare designation of LEED Platinum certification and is now listed for sale at $850,000. • Installed an indoor air exchange system (due to tight envelope);
• Installed a closed-loop, ground-source heat pump;
• Installed a 3 kW, grid-tied solar photovoltaic system;
• Used leftover porcelain, reclaimed wood, and scraps for mantle;
• Used FSC woods, including in the kitchen;
• Installed Energy Star appliances; and
• Installed water-efficient landscaping and a rain garden.

Queen Anne houses have many of these features:

• Steep roof
• Complicated, asymmetrical shape
• Front-facing gable
• One-story porch that extends across one or two sides of the house
• Round or square towers
• Wall surfaces textured with decorative shingles, patterned masonry, or half-timbering

About the Queen Anne style:
Queen Anne became an architectural fashion in the 1880s and 1890s, when the industrial revolution brought new technologies. Builders began to use mass-produced pre-cut architectural trim to create fanciful and sometimes flamboyant houses.
Not all Queen Anne houses are lavishly decorated, however. Some builders showed restraint in their use of embellishments. Still, the flashy "painted ladies" of San Francisco and the refined brownstones of Brooklyn share many of the same features.

Bates Masi Architects created this modern, contemporary riverfront home in Noyack, NY, bringing new, natural luxury to the term "casual." Designed for an actor with rest and relaxation in mind, this home plan “became a study in architectural theatre: a series of spaces in a carefully scripted sequence that subtly reflect his professional life,” explains the architect. A simple, modern facade makes way for gorgeous, light-filled interiors. Expansive windows boast views of the riverfront and gardens, and are covered by perforated privacy screens which slide opened or closed. The architect had some great loft design ideas, with a main living area overlooked by upstairs living spaces. Note the cool wood floor planks, which change direction to demarcate the kitchen, living and dining areas of this open concept house plan. A bold staircase along a glass wall leads up to the second floor, where a master bedroom is connected to the ensuite via a bridge overlooking the downstairs living spaces.

House Styles Neoeclectic

A Neoeclectic home can be difficult to describe because it combines many styles. The shape of the roof, the design of the windows, and decorative details may be inspired by several different periods and cultures.

Features of Neoeclectic Homes:

• Constructed in the 1960s or later
• Historic styles imitated using modern materials like vinyl or imitation stone
• Details from several historic styles combined
• Details from several cultures combined
• Brick, stone, vinyl, and composite materials combined

About Neoeclectic Houses

During the late 1960s, a rebellion against modernism and a longing for more traditional styles influenced the design of modest tract housing in North America. Builders began to borrow freely from a variety of historic traditions, offering Neoeclectic (or, Neo-eclectic) houses that were "customized" using a mixture of features selected from construction catalogs. These homes are sometimes called postmodern because they borrow from a variety of styles without consideration for continuity or context. However, Neoeclectic homes are not usually experimental and do not reflect the artistic vision you would find in a truly original, architect-designed postmodern home.
Critics use the term Mc Mansion to describe a Neoeclectic home that is over-sized and pretentious. Coined from the McDonald's fast food restaurant, the name McMansion implies that these homes are hastily assembled using cheaply-made materials and a menu of mix-and-match decorative details.

House Styles Gothic Revival

Gothic Revival was a Victorian style that borrowed details from Gothic cathedrals and other medieval architecture. Gothic Revival homes in England were most frequently constructed of masonry. In the United States, some large, lavish estates were also made with stone or brick. These homes often resembled medieval churches or castles.

Buildings in the High Victorian Gothic style had many of these features:

• Strong vertical lines and a sense of great height
• Heavy, bold details
• Leaves, vines, gargoyles, and other stone carvings
• Multi-colored masonry, often forming patterns or bands
• Slightly pointed Romanesque arches
• Faithful re-creation of medieval styles

Few people could afford to build a masonry home in the Gothic Revival or High Gothic revival style. In the United States, the masonry versions of Gothic Revival and High Gothic Revival architecture were used mainly for churches, public buildings, and grand estates. However, the ready availability of lumber lead to a distinctly American version of the Gothic Revival style, constructed with wood.

Raised House Plan is "Hot" and Passively Cool

San Diego-based architecture firm Architects Magnus designed this modern ranch house as a reflection of its surroundings, with a nod to the future. This Raised House Plan is a pinnacle both literally and figuratively; a local architectural icon perched on a hill overlooking a vast valley. The home’s raised position invites breathtaking views in, as well as the distant Pacific breeze to passively cool the home during the sweltering summer months. Another “cool” eco-friendly feature of this house is its modern metal roof, which features a deep overhang which shelters the floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors, passively cooling the home in the heat of the day. Interiors are modern and contemporary, with a decidedly rustic element. Natural elements are given the royal treatment for a luscious finish of the stone floors, wood built-ins and ceilings, and an open concept and airy floor plan.
